I Want to Start a Podcast

You have listened to podcasts and you say to yourself, “I want to start a podcast!” It can’t be too hard. Get a microphone. Hook it up to a computer. Hit record, talk, and put it on the internet. Simple.

The first step is to decide on the subject matter of your podcast. In order to prevent podfade, a term associated with the unscheduled abandonment of a podcast, it is vital that you choose a topic that you are passionate about. You’re going to want to enjoy every bit of your subject matter. Keep in mind, every week, two weeks or month, you will be researching or preparing for your episode. You don’t want it to become work. It should be something you look forward to as the time approaches to record your next show.

Don’t think about whether someone will find it interesting or not. You’re going to start with no audience. The reason for starting your podcast is because you have a message, something you want to talk about, that is of a personal passion of yours. A good example of someone finding their passion and finding their subject matter is Dan Mattson. Cliff Ravenscraft interviewed Dan, and how Dan realized that he should do a show on wooden boats!

The topic may not hit you in the face right away. It might be something you are interested in, but have not really explored or know much about. It’s the insatiable curiosity, the hunger, to know more about something that may drive you to your final topic. Make a list of some of those things that come to mind. Eventually you’ll realize, “yes! That’s it!”

So what did you come up with?
